(Durham, N.C.) Trig® Innovation, a Research Triangle, NC-based innovation management firm, recently completed a unique 3D animation video project for its client Mustard Tree Instruments®, an analytical instrumentation company developing innovative solutions to evolving pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing challenges. Utilizing its in-house resources of Bunkspeed MOVE ’12 animation suite in concert with SolidWorks 3D CAD modeling software, Trig® Innovation was able to produce an animated demonstration of the company’s breakthrough VTT-1000 at-line material verification testing tool.

“This was our first time accepting an animation challenge, and we have been deeply appreciative of the opportunity to continue to expand our capabilities,” said Ty Hagler, Principal at Trig® Innovation, adding, “We can now generate marketing assets for greater commercial viability, without sacrificing details in design along the way.”

The resulting animation is being used by Mustard Tree Instruments® as part of a major nationwide educational outreach program to showcase the company’s at-line and in-line materials verification testing products. The animation is shown on Mustard Tree’s YouTube channel, YouTube.com/MustardTreeTV, as well as at tradeshows and prospect presentations.

Industrial Designer Patrick Murphy, who joined the Trig® Innovation design team in the spring of 2011, took the lead on the animation project, a virtual demonstration of the VTT-1000. The product uses Raman spectroscopy, a non-contact, optical laser technology used for the rapid verification of raw materials and finished products.

Spearheading the delivery of client animation needs, Murphy was tasked with generating an elegant animated movie using Bunkspeed and SolidWorks, migrating designs seamlessly between the two software environments. He was able to create an animation piece capturing the internal mechanism of the VTT-1000 in a way that is easy for viewers to understand the technology at work, as well as the product’s value toward helping manufacturers solve specific quality and business problems such as reducing manufacturing lead time, increasing yield, decreasing sample analysis cost and avoiding costly recalls which result in dangerous drug shortages.

According to the FDA, the number of drugs classified as being “in shortage” tripled from 61 in 2005 to 178 in 2010, with more than half of current drug shortages due to manufacturing quality problems.

“We have great admiration for the character and commitment to excellence represented by the folks at Mustard Tree and the important work they are doing with tools like the VTT-1000, which can have an impact on a great number of people,” Hagler said.

To see the Mustard Tree Instruments® VTT-1000 in action, visit YouTube.com/MustardTreeTV or www.mustardtree.com. To learn more about Trig® Innovation, visit www.triginnovation.com or email TyHagler@trig-in.com.

(Research Triangle Park, N.C.) Mustard Tree Instruments®, continuing to lead the way in developing innovative solutions to evolving pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing challenges, announced today that CEO Todd Blonshine will be presenting on quality control issues at Pittcon 2012 in Orlando, Fla. on Sunday, March 11. Blonshine will be the first speaker participating in the High-Throughput Chemical Analysis session track beginning at 1:00 p.m., discussing an emerging multi-variant approach to obtaining immediate, unambiguous results from drug product samples using a combination of machine vision and Raman spectroscopy.

“Raman spectroscopy is non-destructive and only requires a low volume of inexpensive, common material samples for testing with zero prep time,” Blonshine explained.

The Pittcon presentation comes on the heels of Mustard Tree Instruments® successful participation in the 26th International Forum and Exhibition Process Analytical Technology (Process Analysis and Control) (IFPAC) conference in Baltimore, Md. in late January. The analytical instrumentation leader used the highly respected conference on trends in technology, standards, and controls to unveil the latest addition to its game-changing toolset for identification and composition testing of raw and blended materials, the Mustard Tree Verifier™ Process System 1000 (VPS-1000).

Rugged and powerful, the VPS-1000 — about the size of laptop — is specifically designed to fit in the most compact pharmaceutical and chemical processing locations. The unit performs sensitive real-time testing of liquids, powders, solids, gels, suspensions and emulsions in a variety of harsh conditions and hygienic environments. The Mustard Tree Verifier™ Tri-Test 1000 (VTT-1000) multi-variant testing device, released in May 2011, performs non-destructive chemical identification, size, and color analysis in benign environments.

According to Mustard Tree Instruments® Chief Technical Officer and IFPAC attendee Brian Garrett, the event’s focus on the applications of spectroscopy and chemical imaging within pharmaceutical, chemical, food, and petrochemical market sectors fit perfectly with the intended uses of both the VPS-1000 and the VTT-1000 instruments.

“Our toolset simplifies complex decision making processes for both at-line and in-line materials testing in a multitude of continuous manufacturing scenarios,” Garrett explained.

The world’s largest annual conference and exposition for laboratory science, Pittcon 2012 will offer the latest technology and instrumentation from nearly 1,000 exhibitors, a diverse Technical Program of more than 2,000 technical presentations, 90 plus Short Courses and networking sessions.

Todd Blonshine’s presentation at Pittcon will revolve around his submitted paper, “Multi-Variant Technology Combining Machine Vision with Raman Spectroscopy for Rapid Assessment of Pharmaceutical Drug Product Formulation and Dosage Strength” which he co-authored with his company’s Science Officer Brisco Harward, Ph.D.

“With over 17,000 attendees, Pittcon is an important event for our company to meet and partner with innovative industrial and scientific professionals to continue in redefining the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry with a purpose,” Blonshine said.

“We’re known for our experience in product design and prototyping of metal-based products across a multitude of industries, and these additions to our in-house workshop will enable us serve our clients in a new and valuable way,” said Montie Roland, company president.

Providing design flexibility, rotomolding allows for the creation of prototypes with consistent wall thickness, strength and durability, stress-free parts, and low initial tooling costs. Rotationally molded products are highly sought-after in a wide range of industries such as agricultural and industrial; material-handling; and recreational and sporting goods.

Montie Design has just completed its first rotationally molded prototype for an anti-fog device used in snowmobile helmets. The parts were recently sent off for client testing and evaluation.

“The ability to quickly and inexpensively create prototypes using the rotomolding process opens up new design directions for client projects; there are very few companies in the U.S. that offer rotomolding on a prototype basis. Initially, we embarked on this addition to our services as a way to serve one client, but the lack of vendors that are capable of using the rotomolding process to prototype parts indicates an under-served market,” Roland explained.

The Montie Design toolset offers core competencies in mechanical engineering, industrial design, prototyping and product commercialization. The firm is active in numerous design and engineering groups and organizations throughout North Carolina as well as the North Carolina Defense Business Association.

Additionally, Montie Design is hosting a Winter 2012 Student Design Contest for aspiring product designers in community colleges, four-year colleges, or high schools from North Carolina and Virginia. Contest participants will be tasked with developing outdoor, shooting, hunting, archery, and camping products.

(Research Triangle Park, N.C.) Mustard Tree Instruments®, continuing to lead the way in developing innovative solutions to evolving manufacturing challenges, has added to its game-changing toolset for pharmaceutical and chemical applications. Agile, sensitive chemical identification and composition testing of raw and blended materials can now be done online with the brand-new Verifier Process System 1000 (VPS-1000). Tough and powerful, yet about the size of laptop, the VPS-1000 is specifically designed to fit in the most compact processing locations for real-time testing of liquids, powders, solids, gels, suspensions and emulsions in a variety of harsh conditions and hygienic environments.

“We set out to make a very advanced, highly sensitive fit-to-purpose process instrument radically different from other products,” said Stan Ayers, engineering manager for the VPS-1000.

“Our whole criteria across the board was to make it really tough, hence its rugged waterproof enclosure housing the instrument’s sensitive Raman spectrometer usable for qualitative and quantitative testing,” he explained.

Raman spectroscopy has proven to be an accurate method of measuring the purity and composition of raw materials and maintaining the desired mix levels in pharmaceutical processing. Mustard Tree Instruments® is a noted innovator and advocate in the use of Raman spectroscopy within analytical instrumentation, going so far as to produce a YouTube channel, YouTube.com/MustardTreeTV, with a six-minute educational video on applications of the technology in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

According to Ayers, the VPS-1000 excels in both pharmaceutical and chemical processing due to its environmental toughness, reliability, remote operation, and ability to operate in high temperatures and within hygienic environments due to its easy cleaning. Another plus is its size: in direct contrast to cumbersome 95+-pound systems from competitors that come with bulky cooling systems, the VPS-1000 weighs in at just 12 pounds and is easy to install and operate in most any materials processing environment.

The VPS-1000 simplifies complex decision making processes similar to Mustard Tree Instruments® VTT-1000 at-line material verification testing tool for benign environments. Both instruments are in the same class of pricing and pay for themselves quickly with low implementation costs, forming a unique, essential toolset to help drug manufacturers solve specific quality and business problems such as reducing manufacturing lead time, increasing yield, and decreasing sample analysis cost.

“With the VTT-1000 and now the VPS-1000, Mustard Tree Instruments® has closed the gap in testing tools needed to assure quality products being made with fewer recalls,” said Chief Technical Officer Brian Garrett.

The American Medical Association recently went on record saying the rising number of critical drug shortages constitutes a “national public health emergency” requiring a swift and sophisticated response to address the roots of the crisis. According to the FDA, the number of drugs classified as being “in shortage” tripled from 61 in 2005 to 178 in 2010. The FDA further states more than half of current drug shortages are due to manufacturing quality problems.

“Rapid testing with Mustard Tree instrumentation takes the guess work out of quality control and provides our customers with intuitive, easy-to-use tools to assure fact-based decision making versus producing at risk,” Garrett added.

Using a non-destructive laser technology to see through a sight glass (no sample contact), the VPS-1000 eliminates the need for human or instrument exposure to potent materials. The instrument is adaptable for the use as an in-line probe or on-line flow cell. Designed for hazardous location use it has an approved laser safety rating. It is cGMP configured and 21 CFR Part 11 and EU Annex 11 compliant. The device features calibration with NIST traceable and ASTM defined standards and lifetime factory-calibrated sensors.

For more information about the VPS-1000 or Mustard Tree Instruments® please visit www.mustardtree.com or email info@mustardtree.com. To view an educational video on Raman spectroscopy, visit YouTube.com/MustardTreeTV.

(Morrisville, N.C.) Full-service advertising and branding firm The Marketing Machine recently finished an ambitious, innovative rebranding project for Danadams Pharmaceuticals Industry Limited to help overcome literacy and distribution challenges with patients in Ghana, South Africa. The firm utilized its award-winning design services team to redesign all of Danadams branding and packaging using intuitive visual icons and color elements to indicate the type of drugs and dosages and better display information more clearly and legibly. Danadams Pharmaceuticals is currently the only manufacturer of anti-retroviral drugs in West Africa. It also manufactures and sells anti-malarials, antibiotics, analgesics and other opportunistic infection drugs for the West African market.

“Many people in Africa affected by endemic diseases such as malaria, typhoid and HIV are illiterate. Danadams wanted to redesign its packaging to help patients more easily identify the different types of drugs and dosage levels, and to help the healthcare professionals dispensing the medicine” said Greg Fawcett, VP of client relations for The Marketing Machine, adding that the healthcare system in parts of Africa is completely different than what patients see in the U.S.

“What we would call a regular pharmacy over there is a 10-by-10 outdoor stand with stacks and stacks of drugs on top of each other. With the number of generic drugs flooding into Africa in nondescript cartons and poor quality labeling, Danadams wanted to ensure its drugs were packaged in the best possible way,” he said.

According to Fawcett, his firm had to come up with an iconic system for people to understand how the many different Danadams drugs were supposed to be used, creating a way of determining things such as what age group the drugs were intended for.

“We had seven different drugs to deal with, for patients ranging from infants to adults, and we needed a way to highlight who each drug was for right on the box,” Fawcett said.

The project management and design teams at The Marketing Machine researched each individual drug, drug class, and dosage, and developed individual icons and colors for each to help patients understand which drugs they needed, regardless of their ability to read.

“In terms of product colors we wanted each class of drug to be easily identifiable; since the Ghana colors are vibrant, we wanted to mirror that, using the colors that are in their national flag, but have them different enough to avoid confusion,” Fawcett explained.

Similar to work the firm has done with other consumer healthcare and pharmaceutical manufacturing clients, The Marketing Machine functioned as a virtual creative design and marketing arm of Danadams, in this particular case working directly with a contractor hired by Danadams who would travel between South Africa and the U.S. The rebrand took the better part of a year from concept-to-marketplace, with The Marketing Machine creating everything from the ground-up on the new drug packaging, as well as developing the Danadams brand, logo design, pocket folders, envelopes, business cards and website. The firm also helped Danadams set up its fledgling design studio, ensuring that its impact would persist in the company even after the project ended.

Danadams is Ghana’s leading manufacturer in the health sector and is ranked 6th overall on Ghana’s prestigious Club 100 list. The company was named West Africa International Magazine’s Most Innovative & Multipurpose Pharmaceutical Company in West Africa in 2011. In Europe, the company was recognized with the International Arch of Europe 2011 Gold Award for Demonstrated Excellence and Sustainability, as well as the Majestic Five Continents Award for Quality and Excellence in 2011.

(Research Triangle Park, N.C.) Mustard Tree Instruments®, a leader in analytical instrumentation for the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, has launched a YouTube channel, YouTube.com/MustardTreeTV, to shine the spotlight on quality control issues leading to drug recalls and shortages in the United States and new applications of existing technology which can help solve this devastating problem. Additionally, the company has updated its seminal website, www.mustardtree.com, with new interactive features and information about its industry-renowned leadership team; at-line instrumentation products; and an overview of Raman spectroscopy.

“We’ve taken the complex science of Raman spectroscopy and applied it to solving a major problem in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry,” CEO Todd Blonshine said.

“Raw material identity verification is required per good manufacturing practices. The steady increase in the importation of raw materials from non-USA sources as well as FDA oversight is putting more of a strain on quality control resources, which is where the application of Raman spectroscopy can make a difference” Blonshine explained. “Mustard Tree Raman spectroscopy is easy to use, non-destructive and only requires a low volume of material for testing with zero prep time.”

YouTube.com/MustardTreeTV Channel features a six-minute educational video hosted by Blonshine on the applications of Raman spectroscopy in the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector, using humor and even a little magic to break-down the technology in a way everyone can understand.

The four additional videos currently on the YouTube channel explain features of Mustard Tree’s VTT-1000 multi-variant testing device which utilizes highly accurate Raman spectroscopy to determine material identity and purity. Using a small yet powerful sensors and multi variant approach, the VTT-1000 determines each sample’s molecular fingerprint, which is matched in a matter of seconds against established data to detect any discrepancies in the material tested.

In addition to revamping www.mustardtree.com and launching its YouTube channel, Mustard Tree Instruments® senior leadership has been busy advocating on the subjects of Raman spectroscopy and drug shortages at industry events. Todd Blonshine recently addressed pharmaceutical and life sciences professionals at a well-attended Innovation in RTP event hosted by the Research Triangle Park (NC) Foundation, while Mustard Tree’s Science Officer Brisco Harward Ph.D. addressed members of the NY Section of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy.

The recent presentations and YouTube channel launch are a continuation of outreach efforts on behalf of Mustard Tree Instruments® to be at the forefront of the changing dynamics of pharmaceutical manufacturing industry which is seeing the highest number of product recalls in history, contributing ideas and solutions to help solve quality control issues.

For more information about the VTT-1000 or Mustard Tree Instruments® please visit www.mustardtree.com or email info@mustardtree.com. To view the company’s YouTube channel, visit www.YouTube.com/MustardTreeTV.
